A little over one year ago, I wanted to make Nathan a birthday cake.  The month before his birthday, I realized I had NEVER baked any kind of cake.  So I used Andrew’s birthday as an excuse and our small group at church as my taste testers and made my first batch of cupcakes. No joke.  I was 26 years old and that was my first experience with a basic boxed cake mix.  Pathetic, I know.

So after being successful with the cupcakes, I decided I was ready for the real deal.  Coincidentally, this was around the same time that Lindsey and I were really starting to become good friends.  I knew she had taken a cake class before, so I invited her over to help me out.  Her skills were still new, and so was our friendship, but she did a great job of being there to tell me “No, really.  It looks good!”  She was also a huge help with teaching me the most basic of basics (like how to fill an icing bag).  I made Nathan a soccer ball smash cake and baseball cupcakes and here was the result…

Not bad right?  But then Lindsey and I spent the next year taking cake classes and working on our skills.  So, this year, she helped me make this…

I’d say that’s an accomplishment for one year’s time.  Now what will I come up with next year?  =P
